Well, YouTube once had a collective of those types known as âcoolhunters,â per The Atlantic.

It was hard to measure the teamâs impact, and algorithms turned out to be cheaper than human labor â especially as YouTube expanded globally. YouTubeâs coolhunters were disbanded in 2010.
Today, most of our YouTube recs are chosen by algorithms based on our viewing history. Same with TikTokâs âFor Youâ page.
But the term âcoolhuntingâ (AKA trend spotting) was actually coined in the â90s, and coolhunters are everywhere.
