Pillars Of Earth has been right at the top of his form on his last three starts and should have a good shot of hitting the frame in Newbury's opening amateur riders' handicap (1.00).

He looks a solid starting point for a Placepot perm, and we'll add Mrs Meader, who went close for Ross Birkett a couple of times last season.

Licit made a bright start to this campaign when third under regular rider Charlotte Crane last month and she might be the answer to division two (1.35).

It's no race to bank on, though and Thermal, who won second time out last season off the same mark, goes in too.

In the next (2.10), Mysterious Night ran to a Racing Post Rating of 92 on his debut last month and that would have been good enough to win any previous running of this novice, so looks banker material.

The next novice (2.40) is tougher, but Light Of Peace promises to improve on her debut third (second won easily next time) and Sir Michael Stoute's Crystal Caprice, from a good family, is likely to be a big improver this term.

Stay Alert has the best form in the next (3.10), but she might want further and Group 1 entrant Golden Lyra, so impressive on her debut last year, is preferred. Musidora third Ching Shih goes in as back-up.

Finally, Bearaway (3.40) shapes as though he's a lot better than his mark and I'm happy to bank on him if getting that far.
